A collaborative and relational approach to therapy.
The Commonfolk approach
I orientate toward a ‘systems approach’, which means I focus on the relational aspects of human problems and am interested in understanding the specific contexts in which difficulties occur.
I layer this perspective with an integrated approach, which incorporates useful elements from modalities as diverse as psychodynamics and evidence-based brief therapy formats.
I also lean towards a dynamic humanistic orientation that emphasizes self-compassion and positive psychology principles.
Dynamic is shorthand for psychodynamic, which is an approach that relies on a trusting client/counsellor relationship to effect change and looks at the unconscious content of a client’s psyche to help alleviate tension. Humanistic is a holistic approach that focuses on free will, self-discovery and human potential and is oriented toward growth and self-actualization rather than alleviation of disorders.

Who I work with
My clients seek therapy for many reasons. Some are moving through the process of bereavement; others are at a crossroads and need clarity. Some are looking for inter-personal development or a broader response repertoire, while others are exploring the bigger questions, like how does one create meaning? Whatever your reason for seeking support, my goal is that you feel a sense of progress toward the direction you envision for yourself.
I’m interested in working with diverse groups and cultures and I embrace interdisciplinary collaboration (with GPs, Psychiatrists, and other Allied Health professionals), especially when working with complex cases.
Some of the issues I support folks with are:
Mood difficulties (e.g. depression)
Anxiety (general or specific)
Unhelpful thought and behavioural patterns (e.g. anger & ADHD management)
Grief and loss
Self-esteem
Trauma-related difficulties
Communication skills for conflict de-escalation
Relationship difficulties in intimate, family & workplace contexts
Spiritual and life direction/balance challenges
Coaching for those seeking accountability, ideas, & general support

Therapeutic style & modalities
As a counsellor, my style is relational and collaborative. Whether you're seeking long-term therapy or short-term therapy, a solid client-therapist fit is the most important factor of good therapy.
I use a range of therapeutic modalities, including Gottman Method for Couples, Emotionally Focused Therapy (individuals & couples), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Narrative Therapy, trauma-informed care, mindfulness-based therapies, and Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT). This means I can tailor my approach to best suit your individual needs and preferences, ensuring the most effective support for your personal growth.
Above all, finding the right counsellor is critical. In fact, research indicates the factors that have the greatest impact on therapeutic outcomes are the therapeutic alliance and client readiness for change. So while a therapeutic modality or approach is important, it makes up a very small portion of the outcome pie.
